Hello everyone,

Well, the presidential race is almost over for another four years.  I am sitting watching CNN and staying up to date with the election night returns.  The one thing I am definitely glad of is that I won’t have to watch all of the political ads on television everynight.  It had gotten so bad that I was tempted to use my video recorder and record the nightly football games  and come back to watch them and fast forward through all the political ads.  Gosh, but I’m glad this is almost over.  Now I have to sit and watch all the political correspondents talk about every vote. And I do have one question: how do they make some of their predictions?  There are no votes counted for a state but they can make a prediction.  Go figure.

One more bit of good news is to let you know about a big date coming up at the shop.  Well, the date was actually this past Saturday on November 1st.  This was our actual 2nd anniversary date of our store opening.  We thank each and every one of you so much; because we couldn’t have made it this long without you all and your support.  Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!  As a special thank you we will have our 2nd ANNIVERSARY SALE on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 13,  14 and 15.  We will have many, many kits put together with patterns that will be 10% off!  We will also have a lot of yarns discounted 30%!  Then we will discount everything in the store (including the kits and yarns!!!!!) 20%.  so this will be almost a 50% discount on select yarns.  This is all a way to say “THANK YOU!!!”JJ

As a final note I would like to say I spent $2.37 a gallon for gasoline today.  Was it just yesterday I was experiencing deja vu as I saw cars waiting in lines to fill up?  Man things can change so much overnight.  At least it’s a good change!

See you at the shop!

As you probably know I have not been very good at posting on my blog,  in fact, you might even say that I have really stunk at it!

However, now that I have finished my bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Kaplan University, and will finish my latest income tax season tomorrow (how about a big ole “Booyah” for that) I hope to do a better job at keeping everything up to date.  Heck, I may even post something on Twitter and Facebook every now and then!

To people who have been faithful during this long lapse I wanted to let you know we just received some Zauberball and Crazy Zauberball sock yarn in the shop.  It’s incredible.  Stop in and look.

Back from Yarn Heaven! June 17, 2009

Hi everyone,

Just a small note to let everyone know about the great time I had at TNNA this past weekend.  It really is almost yarn heaven when you walk into the convention center and all of those yarn vendors are there with yarns and samples and everything. Oooh!  I almost get shivers!

I spoke to many yarn companies and will be getting some yarns in from Be Sweet.  The company’s best seller is their [Magic Ball][1]. A magical combination of mohair, ribbon, boucle and magic of course that is used alone or in combination with their boucle mohair for shawls or scarfs.

Fiber Isle is another company I made contact with.  This company specializes in buffalo yarns and is located in Canada.  An incredibly soft and supple yarn for shawls and wraps.  I brought a sample back for the Natalie and Laura to see and feel.

There were also some books to buy with so many interesting patterns (have you every seen a knit carrot?).  I am sooo excited about them arriving.  And you getting to see them!

In fact I am excited about it all.

So much yarn, so little time! June 11, 2009

Hi,

well I write this blog entry from my room at the Hyatt in Columbus, OH.  No, it isn’t a vacation, to a yarn and fiber person it is as close to heaven as you can get.  This is time for TNNA.  What’s a TNNA you may ask?  Well, I’m glad you did.  TNNA stands for The National Needlearts Association and every June they have their largest trade show here in Columbus at the Columbus Convention Center.  If you can image the Dean Dome filled with every yarn company, accessories company, knitting bag company and every other item you could think of in one location for you to look at and check out, and of course feel all the lovely, luscious yarn then you can imagine what this is like.

But its not all fun and games.  Retailers also have the opportunity to take crochet, knitting and business classes that will help them improve their business.  Tomorrow night “The yarn group” will present a fashion show with what the hot fashions will be this fall.  Inquiring minds want to know. LOL

I’ll post again before I leave, but I am soooooo looking forward to all the new yarns and goodies to bring back to the shop!

Talk to you soon,

Peggy

Facebook addicts? June 3, 2009

Okay, I know many people love Facebook.  That’s all you hear about on the news.  My daughter uses it, my son uses it, and a lot of other people have to use it or it wouldn’t get so much news coverage.  On the television we see the evening news anchor telling us to follow us on Facebook, many e-mails from different companies are encouraging us to follow them too.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my computer. But the thought of being glued to a computer screen to find out what a news reporter is doing seems a little absurd.  If it was family that lives in another state I’d sign on tomorrow, but so far I can’t find any of my Florida family that has signed up.  Of course, they could be using aliases.  So for right now I’ll know that my daughter had to get up at 4 am with my granddaughter, or that my son is fixing dinner for the family.  Now that’s a message that I love to read about.

Deer Battle Update! May 28, 2009

Since I have included you all in our battle with neighborhood deer for the survival of our garden I wanted to let everyone know that as of yesterday the garden scarecrow is winning.

We worked in the garden Saturday and everything looks wonderful.  Yes, it is amazing to me that our garden actually sits on part of our yard.  Now we couldn’t get a good stand of grass to ever grow on this site . . . but you let me plant a garden on the same ground and grass has become uninhibited!  Yes, it is thick as hair on a dog’s back and as green as …. well, grass.   Yes, nature has a sense of humor.

I’ll keep you posted.

“And what is so rare as a day in June?

Then, if ever come perfect days,….”
James Russell Lowell

Yes, I know this is a repeat of the e-mail newsletter I sent today, but I was waxing a little poetic (which almost every happens) and I wanted to repeat the little poem.

But, enough of that.  Now down to fun and games at the shop.
What is so rare as a day in June?…

….Finding Lantern Moon needles and Sublime yarn on sale!
Could you find anything any more rare at any yarn shop?
We don’t think so at Common Threads!
But that is what you will find at the shop during the month of June,

Deer Attack!!!! May 23, 2009

Well, the deer have struck! They have struck my garden of course!  Yes, those cute, brown furry rascals with the bouncy white tails have discovered a liking for my tomato plants!*X!&#@

Now don’t get me wrong – I worry about our forest friends having enough to eat. Especially now that civilization is taking so much of their natural habitat, but I discovered about 7 or 8 years ago (when we last had a garden) that I drew the line at helping them when they had the nerve to eat the vegetables I really liked.  Then, I lost every one of my field acre peas.  They had eaten them all the way down to the plant – but had left the plant there (I believe it was to mock me!).  This time they must be hungrier because they ate the whole top of the tomato plant.

And how are we going to combat this deer infestation.  Why by cunning of course – my faithful husband has set up a scarecrow with tin pan arms and legs to keep them moving.  I’ve tried to get him and my oldest son to wee-wee around the edge of the garden to keep the deer away, but for some reason he has reservations about doing this in our backyard.  He said something about the neighbors and a camera.  His lack of personal sacrifice to help our garden is a little troubling . . . but for right now we’ll give the scarecrow a chance.

On a more civilized note I want to update you on new arrivals to the shop.  We have an incredible 100% cashmere laceweight yarn from JoJoLand.  With over 400 yards to a skein and with luscious colors at only $26.95.

There is also an 100% alpaca lace yarn from Cascade.  Now get this over 400 yards for only $7.50 a skein.  When the sales rep told me the price I didn’t believe her, but she was right.  Our customer are buying this in multiple skein amounts for those large lace shawl patterns that take over 1,000 yards.  When else can you do a shawl for less than $25.00!!!!

Or if you are thinking about a log cabin or baby afghan, or maybe the Great American Afghan we have restocked our Cascade 220 superwash in many, many colors and in all the colors called for in the Great American Afghan.  Great summer knitting at a square at a time!

Stay tuned.  The next post will contain news about our incredible June sales needles and yarns!!!!

Keeping you “in the loop”

Sometimes we don’t understand! May 2, 2009

Who would have thought that I would blog about the highs and lows of life as we know it on a daily basis.  Right now I have many things to be happy about.  Two wonderful grandchildren, a great family, a job, good friends, so many things to be thankful for.  I work full time in a church and that should be a plus too.  But I have told many people that by working in a church you see the best in people and you sometimes see the worst of situations.  This has been one of those weeks.

I can’t really go into detail, but I think that one thing I understand is that everyone wants what is best for the church, but it doesn’t make decisions any easier to accept sometimes.

Excuse me for talking in riddles, and also for allowing me to vaguely vent just a little.

Join us tomorrow, Saurday May 2nd, for the last day of our 3rd annual “thank goodness tax season is over” sale!  We’re putting new stock out everyday!  Be there or be square!

Tax Season is Over – And Now!!! April 24, 2009

Well, I think the 2009 tax season is over.  At least I did until I sent out an e-mail for the church yesterday that said yesterday (the 22nd) was April 15th.  Was I having a flashback??  Who knows – certainly not me!  Even a couple of days at Holden Beach hasn’t been able to completely clear away all the numbers and words from this feeble brain.  Ha! Ha!

But, now that the tax season is over I can proudly and happlily say that we will indeed have our 3rd annual “Thank Goodness Tax Season is Over” Sale next week!  Yes, that’s right!  Next Thursday through Saturday, April 30th through May 2nd.  However, this year we are doing something a little different.  In keeping with the government’s attempts to stimulate the economy Common Threads will have our very own “Yarn Stimulus Packages”  Brightly colored packages of yarn (both new and old) that will be packaged in bags on sale.  The stimulus packages will be 35% off on Thursday, 40% off on Friday and 45% off on Saturday.  Also, for all of you working ladies we want you to know that new yarns will be put out all during the three day sale.  So everyone should get the chance to get a variety of yarn.

So, everyone join us next week and help stimulate High Point’s economy, or at least the shop’s.  ;)

See you there,

Peggy
